Description :
The composition contains a curvilinear implied line that runs at the bottom of the image. Large collaged shapes differ in size to imply depth and movement. The abstract value represents the majority of the composition, moving backward. The use of secondary, primary, tinting, and shaded geometrical lines in the upper right portion, helps bring focus to the value and simulated texture of the floating circle.
Analysis:
The implied line provides variety from the mostly geometrical shapes throughout the composition. The placement of each shape creates balance as well as movement, due to shadow and size. The varying sizes of these shapes give proportion to the shapes and imply their distance. While the multicolored geometrical lines help balance the activity of the entire composition. The abstract value in the composition has the most weight, expressing dominance throughout the work. The simplicity in the design demonstrates economy. Overall the composition is brought together in harmony by the direction of each shape in its imaginary pull upwards.
Interpretation:
The implied line that runs through the bottom of the composition helps bring focus to the floating letters, it allows them to achieve a sense of movement. The shadows under the letters and shortened lines in the background can help us see the changing sizes in the shapes and continue to move up or back with the design. The shifted shapes allow us to move with the design as to not focus on one single portion. With its simplicity, we are not overwhelmed by the vibrant colors and their intensity that are used throughout the composition. The overall emotional impact is whimsical and light-hearted. The movement of floating brightly colored shapes gives a childlike familiarity we might associate with the use of primary colors.
Judgment:
Finishing up, I feel the overall composition is harmonious but lacks depth in the attempt to show an abstract atmospheric dimension. With the shifting of the shapes, this design would be better balanced and have less focus drawn to the negative space. However, the contrast in color, shape, and value in the upper right corner help to add depth.
